Ficus on Rock. Can you help me?

Early this Spring (February 5) I planted a small Ficus(5 inches tall) in a large deep square pot(maybe 6 inch pot). I planted it on a rock, tied the roots to the rock, rapped it in plastic rap, packed sand inside the rap, and planted rock and all in the soil. Now it's August 26 can I dig up the rock yet? I think the roots are all over the soil. What do you think?

Hi, first question... why sand? Muck is the name of the stuff (nonproprietary - a DIY thing) that's used on the rock to help fix the roots) to use and I can't imagine what sand might do in its place. And did you wrap the whole rock in plastic, or just use some as 'tape' around the roots (as it should be) to hold them? ROR is usually done is by planting to whole mess and then within a few weeks gently brush away (from the top of course) the highest part of the mix to see if the roots have begun to 'harden', ie. change from white to brown. And over the coming weeks or months, brush off more and more as roots harden until you just have woody roots clinging to the rock and standing only in a shallow dish of soil.

Sand works.
If the roots are down in the soil you can probably uncover it but, I'd do what larke said and work your way down.
Of course if the roots are down in the soil but haven't grasped the rock well enough yet, you will have to hold the roots in place until they do.

The easiest way to do this is to protect them with something like innertube rubber and use something like wire or wire ties to hold the roots in place until they do grasp the rock.

As the tree grows and the roots thicken you will have to ease up on the wire or ties so that they aren't left with an ugly mark.

If you go down the list you will see my post about re-potting the ROR ficus recently, older and much bigger but gives you the idea.

I dug up the ficus and found the roots growing all over the soil and rock. The one trouble I had was the one side of the roots on the rock grew out of the rap and didn't attach to it. So I cut that root back and stuck that side in the sad and rapped it back up. Now it's planted back in the soil.

Thanks,
