Newbie with MAJOR questions

Hi,
Brand new to this forum and bonsai. My daughter just sent me a satsuki azalea(if that's the correct name). Came from FTD, seems to be in fairly good shape. Arrived in 4x6 bonsai pot with loose gravel on top of soil. Nothing glued down. Also has a flat black tray with a bag of small white rocks. I assume this if for humidity. Anyway need to know how to take care of it. Know it's an outdoor plant but that's it. Any/all info would be appreciated. Any good sites to go etc.
Thanks in advance.
Mary Beth

RE: Newbie with MAJOR questions

Hi, yes the pot goes on the pebbles in the tray of water, but the trick is to keep the water below the top of the stones so it never gets into the pot and rots roots. Satsuki are not really cold hardy to Pa. and you may have a problem in winter as it will need to be kept somewhere at around 40-45 F. for about 2 mos. as well as acclimatization at either end, a trick unless you have such a place, though an attached garage plus sinking in a big pot of mulch with its own drainage could help. It likes to be watered often, though don't keep the compost soggy wet all the time of course. Read all you can and hopefully find a local club to join - the best place to learn. Go to www.bonsai4me.com and read some more, same for www.bonsaihunk.us/cultural.html, and www.evergreengardenworks.com/articles. Can't give you all the tips etc. you'll need right now, but good luck and get back anytime.
