chamaecyparis pisiferol / sawara cypress

I bought 4 of these about 20 inch tall for containers. They were in 4 inch x 5 inch deep pots and looked very healthy. At home the roots were checked. I found they are seriously root bound and repotted them in 8 inch x 6.5 inch pots but did not touch the roots on 3 of the plants but one was so tangled that 1/4 " was cut from the very bottom.
This may not be the right time of the year to transplant but I did't think there was any other choice. Was I wrong?
Is there anything else I should do or not do to help them survive the winter.
As they are now, what is best time of the year to root prune and transplant.
This was also posted on the conifer web.

Well, either they'll make it, or they won't, and if they're in light shade for now (sun in spring) and don't dry out, and soil mix is gritty, you could be ok except for the one you chopped.
