| So I've got a potted azela I dug up about 5 years ago. It's followed us around and survived it's new location, full afternoon sun on our deck.
I've trimmed it over the years with the purpose of eventually turning it into a bonsai.
In the past few months to my good fortune it has developed two new shoots exactly 3" from the soil level, and is now perfect for a truck chop.
It's nearing fall, so it will be going dorminat I believe, would now be an appropriate time to chop?

| Nope, wait til it's dormant there (Nov-Dec), or even better wait til after it flowers in the spring so you won't miss that. |

| I'd wait 'til late winter/early spring to do the chop. You risk dieback doing it too early in the winter. Waiting 'til after flowering only prolongs the time necessary to have a decent tree. |

| Wayne - what's the rush (another month?) if you lose the best part of it? |

| Well, I chopped it back in winter. It's got 2 limbs in the shape of a Y, One has flower, the other hasn't. Good news is that at the base of the Y, a limb has formed! I'll post pics soon. |

| UPdate with pics.... thoughts????
Looks like a 3rd branch is forming....
Thoughts on when to shorten these two limbs, thoughts on the browning of the leaves? What about when to put in small pot and prune roots, I figured a couple more years.... |

| I'd get it into a deeper pot for now, to allow it to really develop more, and otherwise leave it alone for a couple of years, but if you want to cut back the branches after flowering to encourage more and smaller ones, it's up to you. |
Chopping Azalea?

| I'd also make sure you don't let it dry out at all, and if your sun is strong, keep it in light shade, which may keep it from getting more brown leaves. |

| The pot is 10"-12" deep at the moment, how deep do you suggest? Other option I could plant in in a bed somewhere, which might be better, what do you think? And right after this bloom falls off o.k. to prune the 2 branches? |

| Well I planted in, partial shade so we'll see how it's doing end of this growing season. Here are some pics of a corral bark jap maple we transplanted from our other home, I had considered trunk choping it but decided not too for fear it would not produce any limbs.... oh well....
