Bought seven year old Juniper bonsai...

We bought this late august and have been wondering why theres brown leaves underneath. Just one or two have broken off. I've learned so far it needs to be outside. All the time? We live in MN and it gets really cold in the winter! We bought this from a travelling bonsai guy, out of his truck which was from Texas, but I'm hoping this type of bonsai does better up here. I can tell it likes the sun, since we've put it outside full-time. The soil it came with seems pretty good. A mixture of granular things. The roots don't form a ball or anything but they are slightly twisted around. Is it because of the pot its in? I just want to make sure my plants safe in the winter.
