If this were your adenium, what would you do to it? Repot? What kind of pot? Prune back heavily? Is it best to wait until spring for major pruning?

I was planning to observe the plant and make sure it is healthy for a while before doing anything drastic but I need to figure out what direction to go. I would love to have a compact, fat rooted plant eventually. Can it be done with this specimen? The roots under the soil line are huge bulbous things and I would like to expose them but worried about raising the plant out of the soil too quickly.

Thanks in advance for your comments and advice. Posted photos in the Cacti & Succulents page but no responses yet.

Wait til spring, go for a shallower, wider pot and expose about half the caudex. Choose which branches you want to keep altogether, and prune those back - if you know that it'll bud below the cuts (I'm not absolutely sure about that).

Thanks, lucy. I read in other posts that you can prune adenium way back and they will send out new shoots so I think I'll be bold and cut it short next spring. I just repotted it in a mix with Oil-Dri and raised the caudex a little because I wanted to check the health of the plant under the soil line (Walmart isn't known for their plant care!!). Sure enough a bunch of the fine roots had rotted away and the soil was very wet. Even a frog in there.

I will wait until Spring before pruning.
