| well, I have a lot of questions and I need some big help from all of your experienced minds! I am taking on the task of trying to make a bonsai from a ficus elastica plant. Here is the first issue; The stems are very green, making me wonder if this is not a tree variety. I have taken the 2 stems and twisted them together with wire. Will they thicken up and grow together and turn brown like a normal tree root? Also, I know that this particular ficus has very large leaves, but I am hoping to get some advice as to how to shrink them. This is a task I want to take on and try to figure out, but I am not going to pretend that I really know what I am doing ;-) Those are my first 2 questions. I''m sure there will be more to come. Thanks so much! |

| Hi, yes it has been done, but I don't think it'll be the easiest one to try, because of the big leaves, though I've seen smaller leaved varieties lately. The second thing is that you should not be wiring green stems on any plant as you will end up with ingrown wire and wrecked stems. Something like raffia is a much better idea (you can get it at craft stores and use it to wrap the stems together). |
