Fukien Tea Cherry

I am amazed that I have been able to keep my fukien tea alive this long! I didn’t know anything about this tree until lucy identified it (thanks lucy) and seemingly got rid of a infestation of ants and black fly. Also having problems with soil causing for a repot twice.

It has grown continuous white flowers, they burst open, then turn brown and wither within 2 days (is this normal?) Now I have just noticed a large green cherry, I guess it means its in good health if it can produce this. Will I be able to pot these and if so when is the best time to?

Thanks

Are you thinking of potting the cherry pits? I have no idea if that will work (I've only grown them from teeny seeds from an online co.) but why not try it? It sure sounds like you're doing a lot right! I imagine the short flowering term is normal if you keep getting new ones.

I`ll give it a try though when would be the best time to plant it? When green or red? When it falls? and would getting the seed out the cherry be wise or not?

Jimmy.

I have never planted the fruit either, but my tree this year made copious amounts. They will eventually turn red, then wither and fall. I would collect the fallen fruit in a cool dry place until the end of winter, then plant in a small pot. Unless you live in a tropical area, then there is no cool dry place.
Good luck!

if you are going to plant cherries, I would put them in the refrigerator for a few months before planting. If they are not placed in a cold region for a long period of time (simulating winter), the seed will not germinate. If you are willing to do this however, you should be able to get a few seedlings. They may or may not be true to type though....

Also, take the cherry pit out of the fruit before planting.
If the cherry is not ripe, the seed inside may not be fully developed- don't forget about putting the seeds in the refrigerator!

He's not growing cherries - they're Fukien tea 'berries', and a hugely different plant altogether - he just called them cherries.

Sorry for the confusion...realised after i posted that they are called Berries, not cherries.

So would the same apply to germinate the seed in the berry?

They are tropical and therefore need no cold stratification. Just plant them.. and if you need more info. on that let me know.
