Need Ginkgo Bonsai 101...

Got this little Ginkgo today, so what do I do for a Ginkgo bonsai? I don't plan on using any wire, want a natural shape. Ginkgos are cool, my first choice for a bonsai... is it too hard for a novice?

- do i really keep it outside year round in zone 5b Ohio? I read to "protect from freezing" or keep the pot from being exposed too much, because the roots might freeze and burst? so what does that mean? if it's outside in the winter it's cold obviously. I suppose i could put it in the garage during extremely cold periods or heavy snow. bury the pot in the ground during winter? I don't understand...

- what soil should i use? mix?

- what fertilizer? when?

- replant every Spring? does that mean shaking out the soil and replacing with new soil? do i get a larger container, when?

- when do i know to top it?

- any other stupid questions i could/should ask?

yes, i don't know what i'm doing...

Why did you buy it (first) and then ask about it? If you PM me I'll help you - but all your Q's are too long for here...

Did you try Googling Ginkgo Bonsai? There are quite a few results, and (even though I don't know much about Ginkgo) you'll probably be able to find at least some good information to begin with.

well, I have not been very interested in the typical available pre-started Bonsai. I thought about getting a Ginkgo (a really cool tree IMO) bonsai and just found a "starter" small tree... I was hoping for some info based on personal experience, to take it seriously, and have this Bonsai for the rest of my life.

- what do i really do in winter, in practical terms

- i still find the term "repotting" kinda vague. since you are putting it back in the same pot, i assume you are changing the soil some and maybe root pruning?

do Bald Cypress make good Bonsai... maybe i'll try that later and collect some seeds
