Transplanting after-care

Last spring I transplanted a false cypress and a Japanese maple. The soil was completely removed and replaced with fresh bonsai soil. They were watered well every day. The maple died the cypress is doing really well.
I started reseaching after-care on the internet and books and found plenty of information on transplanting but not much on after-care.
Any help will be appreciated.
Any web site address or book that will help will also be appreciated.

You wont find this information either, Japanese Maples do best if re-potted in the summer.

If you watered every day you probably killed the Maple with kindness. You only water when the water is needed. Even a human being can over-does on water believe it or not.

The Cypress loves copious amounts of water and is well adapted to growing in conditions where it is standing in water for hundreds of years.

That's what I thought at first but except for the maple that was transplanted all the other maples survived with the same watering program. I think there is something else I'm missing. There was plenty of drainage material in the bonsai mix.
One book said to soak in water for 15 to 20 minutes after transplantig than put in semi shade for 2 weeks to a month and spray the leaves with water often every day.

Just re-read your message.

"Japanese Maples do best if re-potted in the summer"

I went back over my notes and found that I do have trouble with early spring planting, re-planting and transplanting into pots of Japanese maples.
last month I made a forest of 9 maple seedling, failed grafts, and cuttings and all survived, are doing real well and are just starting to get fall color.
Mabey early transplanting of maples is my problem?
By the way I have had the same problem with Junipers.
Mabey transplanting is my problem

Junipers as well seem to do better if re-potted during periods of active growth and not just coming out of dormancy. This is a great flaw I find with the traditional teachings as have been taught for as many years as I have been growing bonsai---1957.

Just read your discussion on root pruning on "bonsai talk".

"Then with a sharp saw or knife remove one third to one half of what is left of the soil mass by cutting it off with the saw or knife"

Does this mean from the bottom of the root-soil mass and than tease open the roots growing in a circle by the edge of the pot?

Yes on the root pruning article.

As to the Maple. You said you watered with the same program you used on the Maples you did not transplant. This is your problem. A transplanted Maple, or anything else for that matter, does not have the same capacity to cycle water after it has been transplanted. Not as many roots and a state of temporary shock both diminish the ability to use water. If you watered the same way you watered the actively growing trees you over-watered it and probably rotted the roots.

Thanks for all your help and thanks for the root pruning article.
At 70 years old and with 2.5 years experiance I have to learn fast and am always looking for short cuts and better ways to work on the plants.
