I'm new to Bonsai. I decided to start a hobby and get into it. I chose a Dawn Redwood Bonsai from a website with the pot, soil, pruning scissors, book, etc...the whole nine yards. I've been reading up, trying to get prepared...but does anyone have some tips for caring for a Dawn Redwood Bonsai properly (especially in the winter)?

Hi - I'm not clear whether you have a tree, a seed-in-waiting, or what? It makes a difference as to what you need in the way of help. Your local climate is really a bit colder than Metasequoia likes, so you will have to deal with winter protection in a serious way, but the tree otherwise must absolutely remain outdoors for life as it does need cold dormancy for months. What is the soil like? What book? More info would help a lot!

I'm getting a seedling, the soil is described as a mix of grit and organic matter that forms an open water retentive soil but allows for free drainage (but there's only enough for 1 potting), the book I think is called Bonsai (101 Essential Tips), and then a fertilizer comes with it as well (it doesn't specify what is in the fertilizer mix). The soil around my house is dominantly clay. When I plant it for the winter should I supplement it with a Bonsai-friendly soil mix? As far as winter protection, my initial spot for planting it would be at the south/southwest side of my house in one of my landscape beds under a crabapple tree. It will be sheltered from the winds out of the North. I'm wondering if this will protect it enough?
