Coral Bark Maple Air Layering/Propogation

| Earlier this season I started air layering a coral bark maple. Only a few weeks ago did it starting rooting. Its has developed some, but not extensive, roots.
The tree from which I am propagating is a container tree, so I will move it into my garage for the winter. My problem is that I don't know whether I should cut my air layer limb before winter or not.
On the one hand I am not sure the roots are well developed enough to sustain the air layer limb on their own. On the other hand I don't know if leaving the air layer container on through the winter will result in root rot, given how the air layer container holds moisture.
Does anyone have any experience with this problem or any thoughts?
Thanks!

| Are you using soil, sphagnum moss, other, as the medium? Al |

| The medium is a spongey artificial dirt like material. I have propagated with it before. It holds a good amount of moisture and once the roots have hardened off I just pinch it away from the roots and plant the new plant in bonsai type soil. Brendon |

IMHO cut It's roots have started and tree is going dormant and leaves will drop; tree is resting roots and leaves should flush out together in spring |

| I would wait until next year, after the spring flush of growth.Maybe mid spring when it is still cool outside. Depending on the size, it may or may not survive the cut right now. Just dont keep the medium soggy or it will rot the roots. Jason |
