| I am getting conflicting information from them about seed planting. I have some crabapple seeds (Sorry, but I'm not sure what kind of them. I hope this doesn't affect the answer), and one book says I should plant it in late Fall, but the other says I should plant it in Spring. I have searched through internet sites and they say the same things.
Then the ones who say plant in Fall, says that i need to cover it with leaves and twigs because of my zone, but then it tells me that it needs good light. The pot sizes also vary. |

| Just plant them in the ground, now. You'll have a better chance of germinating them (being outside will cold strat them naturally) and then let them grow in ground for 3 years to get a head start on decent trunk development. After that you could grow them out longer in training boxes, or go straight to bonsai training - or leave them in the ground even longer. |

| Lucy's right. Apples and crabapples need stratification in order to germinate, and this can take as much as 3-4 months of cold to happen. You will also need to scar the seed coat some before planting (scarification). From Iowa State University: "Most apples and crabapples will not reproduce true from seed. They are usually propagated by grafting and budding. However, seed of most apples and crabapples are viable, and can be germinated. Matt |
