new trees from heel cuttings?

i was in a bookstore yesterday and i glazed over a few bonsai books. I came across one that mentioned and had instructions for growing new trees from heel cuttings. has anyone heard of the process? is it a reliable way to grow new trees? any tips or info on this method is appreciated.

A heel cutting is just one method of preparing a cutting for vegetative propagation. It's a method usually used for woody plants that initiate root primordia on older wood. A mallet cutting would be very similar to a heel cutting except that it would have an entire crossected piece of the main stem where the cutting was attached.
