Hi everyone, first time on the forum. I have a rather large group of cuttings and nursery stock thickening up but nothing that has really needed critical attention till now. I found a narrow leaf ficus mallsai and it ended up coming home with me. I would've resisted but I've been looking for this type of ficus for months with no luck locally. Now the question is whether or not to repot this little guy from the cardboard consistency soil it's in now or wait till spring(Yes I did pull those stupid glued on rocks off it). The container and soil it's in now are terrible but this is also far from the ideal time of year to repot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention other conditions for the plant. It's in a greenhouse (low-light area while it recovers from the move) with a fairly consistent low-80F temp and high humidity. The potting media I have to use is mostly Oil-Dri with some composted bark in it. Thanks again.

Hi - get your ficus into HIGH light now, or loose all the leaves, and don't worry about repotting now - indoor trees (tropicals) don't have the same kind of seasonal reactions that outdoor trees do (they live in the same atmosphere all year round).

It had already lost a lot of its leaves but from what I've read this is normal when moving a willow leaf. Plus, the conditions it was in when I bought it were far from ideal. It's starting to bud back out now and I'm wondering if I should repot now or wait till it leafs out stronger. Any thougths?

Why not wait (unless you perceive the need to be urgent)?

I'm not terribly keen on leaving it in the soil that it came in. It's pure peat and I worry about damage to the roots. Conversely I don't want to damage anything by repotting with the plant not fully recovered. Unsure which would be the lesser of two evils.

Just wait a LITTLE while until it's a bit more recovered - sometimes you have to balance the evils, and while I hate peat too, at least you're aware of it and can be very careful with water.

My experience with a ficus with narrow leaves was in the country of my birth, Malaysia. You just couldn't believe the rate of growth of these creatures in the tropics. I bought it as a 2 foot plant, grew it in the backyard by the koay pond. It sends out aerial shoots everywhere and even achored them in the water. Now after about 15 years it has reached a height of 30 to 40 feet and its main stem is massive. Problem is the occupants are after my blood as it is going to cost over a $1000 dollars to chop it down. I wonder if it is the same specie mentioned here. The seller claimed this ficus comes from Taiwan. I have always shunned away from botanical nomemclature ( can never spell it right) because it is massive and tongue twisting. Perchance now I am beginning to see the light of day and appreciate its value after entering this forum. |
