The beauty of growing from seed is that you can style it any way you want! I wouldn't worry about the nuts, you can always take them off instead of allowing your plant to bear. I have quite a few peppers I'm overwintering & the ones I've chosen to practice with (having thick trunk & good root spread), I'll probably not bother with fruit from these guys.

I'm also a beginner but the order in which I'm going is to grow a fat trunk, nice root spread & then develop branches. Meantime, I'm reading all I can & learning about the particularities of the material I've chosen.

Recommendations are to locate a local bonsai club & join. With any luck, you'll have one nearby that can help you with the inevitable questions that arise. There are a ton of books too =)

I wasn't sure which to focus on first: root or trunk so thanks so much for your advice.
Our local club is having a meeting within two weeks so I hope I'll have enough time to drop by. =)
My pecan isn't growing as I wanted it to (I thought there were roots and now there aren't? @__@) so I'll either stratify it and continue growing or just continue with another project. I read boxwood is a good beginner's bonsai and we have some in our yard that I can get clippings from. I'm looking forward to it =D
