New to bonsai

I just bought my first bonsai, a juniper. I was told to water it everyday and give it fresh air; I have it indoors, is this a problem? I crack the south window it is in for air. Also, what I think is the rootball seems to be somewhat exposed; at the base, there are what appear to be small rootlets/twigs sticking out of a clump of soil - or is this the way it is supposed to look? All the other junipers looked like this in the store. I have had it for 2 weeks, and love it. I read the thread in this forum by bennyman and got some good info, but I am a total newbie when it comes to bonsai. Any tips much appreciated, thank you

Eileen

If you are watering it every day, you won't have it for long - I'm surprised you haven't written in saying the foliage is going hard and pale, or rusty colored! It definitely does belong outside, possibly mulched into a larger pot that has it's own drain hole, and should only be watered when a fair amt of the soil is dry (I say that assuming it came planted in the usual muck these mall-sai get stuck in), and really should be in a mix that allows water to drain through almost immediately, so while the top may feel dry on yours now, I'll bet anything the bottom half (where so many roots are) is still wet. A lot of grit needs to be mixed in and the soil itself changed to something other than peat-based potting soil. If there's a layer of pebbles glued to the top of it, it should have been pried off on day one, but better late than never. Don't worry about whatever is coming out of the soil on top, they could be roots, or ex-cuttings that were pruned before potting, etc. There's lots of time to deal with them later on. Once things freeze up outside, don't water until it thaws so much that a lot of soil dries out. Do allow snow to pile on top though.

Fuchsia bonsais are a good indoor option if you can't easily keep anything outside.
