They do .... and don't let them dry out - they lose viability very quickly. Q ilex seeds take anywhere from 4-12 months to germinate, and even when conditions are ideal germination is hit/miss. Shallow sowing and light exposure help a lot. A GA-3 gibberellic acid treatment improves germination - especially if you sow them too deep or in the dark. I would soak them for 1 day, then vernalize them in the fridge - in a little screened perlite + some chopped sphagnum moss (not peat moss) and sow in spring. Alternately, you could sow them now in some bonsai soil and over-winter them on the garage floor, covered by an overturned cardboard box to prevent loss from killing low temps. This treatment will take care of vernalization nicely. Set them outdoors in the spring - 50* is ideal germination temperature after vernalization.
