Pest identification and solution

I have a 4 year old dwarf schefflera. i have a potting soil, sand and fish crap from my aquarium mix soil. these bugs have been showing up and their numbers have been growing FAST. i keep a towel under my tree to catch water and new towels are crawling with maybe 10-15 new almost microscopic larvae. ive looked up some gnat, and the fungus gnat seems close, but the larvae is NOTHING like these. HELP! heres a picture of what im dealing with....

This is the best photo i can get. it looks like a head and a long slender body. The smaller ones (younger i presume) seem to be more clear or not as dark. the larger larvae are darker, and much bigger in size (although still small, photo is close to largest larvae i found)

Tried to give you some scale to it...hope this helps
