Spider Like Mites on Ginseng Ficus

Posted by aloefreak1 AK 3 (My Page) on

Hi, i bought a Ginseng Ficus this summer and it's been doing really good but it recently got these little red spiders that are almost/or are the size of mites. I tried using a mite killing plant spray but it didn't work. Do you guys know what they might be and a quick and effective way to get rid of them without any side effects?

THANKS!

One of the standard treatments for spider mites is Volk Oil. Use it according to the directions on the bottle. I have used it on my Ficus for scale and it works for that. I also use it on junipers for spider mites and it is effective on them. If you want to jazz it up a little use 1 tbs. Volk Oil plus 1 tbs. malathion per gallon of H2O. That is more potent but smelly and not good for fish or birds. Good luck, Jack

Something you have to remember is that most mites go thru 5 life cycles from egg to adult. That means one dose won't do it, you should treat for at least 5 weeks and sometimes more like 6 or 7.

One safe control I've used is plain old Ivory Liquid. It's safe for most trees and deadly to most pests. It can be used as a soil drench and spray @ 2oz per gallon of water.

Another safe/easy way to keep most pests from setting up house in soil is to use about 10% kennel bedding when you re-pot. It's a cheap fix and you can also spread a little bit on the top of the soil from time to time.

That's a neat idea, kennel bedding. Isn't that cedar? I'm running into a spider mite problem also carried in by some Plumerias.
