I have Blue Oaks in containers, and I re-potted them in December. Basically, you want to wait until all the leaves have fallen...and the tree is dormant. Are they in containers already? Josh |

Josh is correct about the time of year to transplant. YOu might want to cut off the taproot at the first repot so it doesn't cause problems later. Be sure to leave any small side roots alone so they can take over. Josh are you makeing bonsai out of your blue oaks seedlings? I live right in the middle of blue oak country and have been considering giving them a try. What is your experience with this? Jack |

Yes, remove that tap-root the first year! Everyone I know who grows oaks from acorn removes that tap-root... Jack, I'm considering my oaks for bonsai, but they're small at the moment. This winter I'll do the second re-potting, which will allow me to evaluate roots. I only have about a year's experience with Blue Oaks...but I have hundreds of seedlings in my yard! ;) I have an ID Thread floating around somewhere...I'll see if I can find it on the Tree Forum, then I'll post a link to this Thread.
