Satsuki Azalea How to overwinter?

I have a Satsuki Azalea that was given as a gift by my daughter back in spring this year. It's doing fine, but I need to know how to get it through winter here. Winters can be very cold and snowy here! It is an 'outdoor' plant. Do I put it in the unheated shed? Turn on it's side for better drainage, too? Or what?
Sorry, but I have never had a bonzai before and don't want to kill it over winter lol!
What do others do with their "outdoor" bonzai over winter? Here's a pic of the plant:

I can't keep azalias where I live but in reading some of my bonsai books they recommend preparing a bed by digging a hole 6-8" deep and sinking the pot into it and covering it with pine needles, straw or sawdust. The idea is that the roots need protection from freezing. Leave the top of the plant exposed to light. You may want to cover the top with clear plastic to protect from wind. Do not bring it indoors. The heat and dryness will probably kill the tree. Azalias are native to the mountains of Japan and China where they are exposed to snow and cold so I think you will be alright. Good luck, Jack |
