Serissa-problems with lack of leaves

I've had a serissa (15 years old) for almost a year now and up until recently, had no problems, i water when the soil is almost dried out and have the tree on a humitity tray. however, recently, the leaves on one side of the tree have all dropped and although there are a couple of new leaves growing, the tree looks very bare along one side. there are plenty leaves on the other side of the plant and these look healthy and green. the tree is on a windowsill so gets direct light for a few hours a day. oddly though, the side of the tree closest to the windowsill is the side with problems. the tree is on a humidity tray and as there isnt a radiator near the tree so i dont think there is a problem with humidity, and i cant see any sign of disease or pests on the affected branches of the tree, so im totally stuck as to what the problem is any how to resolve it! any help would be much appreciated!!

It could be reacting to the changing light (less of) by being 'deciduous'. Serissas can take fairly cold conditions (to below 50 sometimes) and are more semi than 100% tropical. Try turning the tree around and see what happens to the other side. And remember that the fewer leaves on the tree, the less often you should water. But don't let it completely dry out and hopefully in a few weeks or so you'll see new leaves, if not later on in early spring.

also, did it change temperature abruptly? sometimes they'll sulk at that as well as light changes. as long as the leaves are yellowing prior to dropping its unlikely theres a serious problem

I have a lot of trouble with Serissas. They have very touchy root systems that are prone to rot and/or fungal infections. When you see troubles with one part of the tree, and all the care ABOVE the soil line is the same (i.e. universal watering, universal light with pot rotation, etc) odds are that the problem is with the roots. Sounds to me like some of your roots may have died :( How is the soil? Is it still open and porous? Is it a small tree or a larger tree?

The exact same thing happened to my serissa two years ago. What I expect happened in my case is that I unknowingly put it near a vent that blew on that side of it, and caused a die-off.

RE: Serissa-problems with lack of leaves

Hey, thanks very much for all your help. Im keeping an eye on the plant and have seen a couple of new leaves on the side which has been sufferring so i've got my fingers crossed. As far as i know the temperature and light didnt change abruptly so i dont know if the problems could be related to light or temperature. im interested in alex's reply, i dont know if the roots could be the problem, how would i manage to find out? the soil seems to me in the same condition as it was a while back before the problems started and i dont want to go messing around with the roots when i dont know what im doing or if the problem is there...if you could give me any advice that would be great. thanks guys!
