Welcome to the four dimensional art of bonsai. I hope you get as much pleasure from it as I have over the years. I am assuming that you live in Kansas and in USDA zone 6. If that is true I don't think that the quinces are out of the question but you can wait on that till you have some experience. The style of tree is less important than the species. For beginners a good choice is one of the junipers such as Procumbens nana, Prostrata, San Jose, Foemina (needle juniper). These all lend themselves to the informal upright style (moyogi) but can be windswept, or cascade easily also. Foeminas are often formal upright. Deciduous trees also make good bonsai and I would recommend Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) or Japanese Maple (Acer japonicum) as a good beginners choice. Hornbeam, Hackberry, Zelkova and crabapple, (Malus) are also good. The problem is that we are getting into winter and in you area everything is either already dormant or will be very soon. So you can wait until spring to start buying trees or you can buy them now and just over winter them until the spring when you can start working on them. In any case you should use the winter time to read up on bonsai and find a bonsai club to join. Belonging to a bonsai club will give you a wealth of help from experienced people who can save you many false starts and mistakes. The best single book on bonsai in the US is still Bonsai Techniques I, by John Naka. It is sold by the Bonsai Institute and you can find it on the internet. There is a new bonsai book published each month it seems like. Some good authors are: Harry Tomlinson, Peter Chan, Peter Adams, Marty Mann, Jerry Meislik (indoor Ficus), Lynn Perry. You can locate a club by Googling something like "bonsai clubs". There is an American Bonsai Society and Bonsai Clubs Internationoal which have web sites that might help you locate a club in your area. Good luck, Jack
