Ficus 'too little' possible mold problem?

Posted by ebakes (My Page) on

I recently replanted a starter ficus from basic potting soil to somewhat course bonsai soil. Right near the base of the trunk it was hard to remove all of the potting soil without damaging the roots. So I left a little of it, it was about a month after the repotting that a white fuzz like substance began appearing. It's been about two weeks and when I water it I run the water lightly over the substance and it goes away for a day then comes back. The plant is not dropping leaves and new shoots are still forming. I have been careful not to over water the plant but I think the little amount of potting soil is just holding too much water and not drying up as fast as the bonsai soil. If this is the case should I repot again and make sure to remove all of it? If too soon to repot again, Is there any recomendation for something to spray it with?

Thank you
Eric

Use a houseplant fungicide, cut back on watering for a few (more) days than you've been giving it, and hopefully the problem will be taken care of. You can go quite a while between waterings with ficus before actually killing it by underwatering, and after all, it will usually give a little warning by looking tired, a bit droopy, etc. at which time you can water and learn what works best for your tree.

Thank you for your help lucy. It seems to have worked no more pop ups of mold.

Thanks again,
Eric

I agree with Lucys soultion. It should work well. Just to throw a few tid-bits out there.

The fungus was white/gray cotton like, growing above ground and not on your plant, then it should have been harmless. If it was black, mildew, cakey like, then you may have had a problem.

Either way, the chemicals you used should have worked.
