| I have 2 Chinese Elm Catlin variety and want to put them in an unheated dark garage for the winter. The problem is they don't seem to be losing their leaves. Can i store them in the garage with the leaves on and have them fall on their own? Temps here around high 40s low 50s during the day and low 30s at night. I have read that you don't want to leave them out too long and have the fleshy roots freeze and kill the tree.
Sincerely,

| If the leaves are still on the tree then it hasn't gotten cold enough to damage the roots. I would give the tree another month to go dormant naturally then if the leaves are still on then you could defoliate the tree by hand and put it into protection. One of my Chinese elms is still fully leafed out while some others I have are in various stages of loosing their leaves. The ones under shade cloth seem to hang onto their leaves the longest. Be patient. Jack |

| Mine are still in leaf even this late in the year , I suspect it'll be another month before mine goes dormant . |

| Oh no, do NOT defoliate an elm (or any tree) because you think they should be losing leaves now! For one thing, many elms don't do it. It doesn't make them "evergreen", but comes close to it, and it's just a quirk of theirs. Never defoliate a tree trying to play god in winter, only do it for leaf reduction a couple of times over a tree's younger lifetime, and that would be in spring. |
