roots coming through bottom of pot - repot?

I have an azalea bonsai that my hubby got for my for my birthday, July before last (July 2007). It's done fine so far. I was going to start the overwintering process, which for me in the past has been to basically plant it, pot and all, in a large flower pot for the winter.

But this year I noticed that the roots have started to come through the bottom of the current bonsai pot. Should I just trim these or is it time to repot? I don't want the small roots to take hold in the large flower pot over the winter. I am a bit apprehensive bout repotting because the plant is like wired in with thick gauge wire, but there is a nursery around here that has bonsai supplies, so I'm at least ok in that regard. Does the azalea need an upgrade??

I can post pics if necessary! Any help would be appreciated to keep it blooming again in the spring.
