Sweet gum

I recently found some saplings in work yard

They are growing in crushed concrete! They are all over.

They don't have tap roots and some are about 2 ft tall and have a trunk of about an inch and more. My question, is sweet gum trees a good candidate for Bonsai?

No idea, but if they are growing like mad and are free you might as well try since they would just end up being discarded.

Yes they are often used as bonsai, and make good ones. BTW - if these plants are volunteers, they DO have tap roots.
