Fern Leaf Hinoki Cypress?

Hello again everyone,

I bought this monster at a nearby nursery for $10. And to be honest, I went at first to look for a Cotoneaster, so shame on me. The tree is about 3 feet tall and has a nice 2 inch plus trunk. It also has a large amount of backbudding going on on the old wood (this can be seen in the last picture). Which goes against what I have read about these trees. I would like to chop it down low when the right time comes. Would the correct time for a Hinoki be in the spring? And sorry for the pictures, it was hard to get a clear one of the trunk through all of that foliage. Comments?

I would take your time and try to envision some different shapes the tree. Take your time deciding as once its done there's no going back, especially since Hinoki Cypresses are know for not growing new branches once you cut the existing one off. Once you get the desired overall shape the best method is the "pinching" technique where you simply pinch the new emerging buds for branching ramification. Pruning in spring or early summer should be fine as well. Good luck :)

Cool tree, Ryan!
Nice thick trunk you scored there!

Thanks Mike and Josh!

I have yet to do any pruning on this thing, but I know I need too. It is just far too top heavy. Once I give it a good haircut I'll post some better pics.
