 o
Ulmus/Crataegus move

I've found 2 large ulmus parvifolia(listed as lacebark elms on the tag but looks like chinese elm and I believe I've read that's an older alternate name) and a large crataegus at a nursery about 40 miles away and am trying to figure the best way to move them home. There's nothing interesting whatsoever about the trunks of the elms other than their size so they would be getting whacked down soon and the hawthorn isn't too exciting after the first 8 inches or so either.
My question is whether or not now would be a permissible time to chop the trunks for the move or not. I would think that the upper portion of the tree has pretty much provided all the food for the roots that is going to happen for this year but I'm nowhere near comfortable enough with my own knowledge yet to risk doing something hasty and killing them.
I'd much prefer to wait till spring to break out the saw but the logistics of moving three 12'ish trees in my Hyundai are pretty daunting.
Thanks much for any advice.
Oh. The reason for buying trees without much lower movement is the price was unbeatable and I'm new enough I'd kinda hate to go butchering something that could have otherwise been turned into a nice tree. Thanks again.

Find a friend with a pick-up, build a travois :-), pay the nursery to deliver them, but if they're not definitely well into dormancy yet, I wouldn't chop them there.
