David, 'most' Jasmine are tropical and/or sub-tropical plants, some will tolerate temps down into the 50'sF for a period of time, most grow well and thrive in a moderately hot and humid environment. As a tropical evergreen they don't go dormant as such, they will go into sort of a semi-dormant period during very hot weather.

They will grow well in most soils providing the soil/pot drains well. Mine grow very well (in Vietnam) in a mix of coarse sand and crushed basalt, they like medium to high light levels. Blooms can be created almost any time of the year by using fertalizer. I imagine that a good coarse potting soil would work well. What you lack indoors, in Detroit is the humid heat.

In some cases root-rot could be an issue, as could spotty watering habits, not soaking the soil completly at each watering. Keep in mind that mine go through a monsoon season that lasts from 2 to 4 months so they are constantly wet during that time, the temps are also reduced by as much as 10 to 15 degrees. They continue to do well.
