The only way that seems to work in my mind to create taper on this species is to allow the plant to grow out for a few years. At some point a few inches above the soil line the trunk will split to two main trunks. Removing one of them will give a hint of taper.

The limb I removed was about 1 1/2" and is still visible. Smaller cuts have diminished and will disappear, but I'm not sure how long it will take this one.

I'll try to show a few photos of the one I'm playing with next week.
