Hi everyone. I've bought a Japanese Maple bonsai (20 years old - very healthy) for my husband for Christmas and I really need some advice. I have to pick it up on Friday - the day we go to his parents' for Christmas. We will be away for over a week. My question is - would it be better to take the tree with us where my husband can tend to it in their garden, or water it before we leave and hope for the best. I should point out that we will be travelling in excess of 1,000 miles in our car, and we have no neighbours or nursery who can look after it for the holiday period. The bonsai has no leaves at the moment (as it is winter), and temperatures right now are between 3-12C. It will be kept at home on an east-facing sheltered balcony. Any advice will be gratefully received.

I would leave it. It won't need much water to speak of in any case, having no leaves, though if the soil is dry on top before you go, do give it some in case of a freeze-up while you're gone. Even in summer, maples are better being allowed to get somewhat dry between times.

Indeed, it should be fine left at home. Rick
