I used to buy seeds from Whatcom, but I then realized growing from seed is a long and patience requiring process.

Here is a link that might be useful: Whatcom Seed Company

Any decent bonsai website usually sells Japanese seed packets.

OK So I am 75 . Would I live long enuff to grow a tree from seed past the seedling stage?

Depends on the species of tree ;-)
You could do a lot with a Trident Maple in 3 - 5 years.

If you are willing to trade, you might want to try the seed exchange forum here at Gardenweb. Some of the trees I've grown from seed trades are Pawpaw, Carolina Silverbells, Poncirus trifoliata (these all grew to blooming size now), Golden Chain Rain, Franklinia, Amelanchier, Ginko and Katsura, among others. I have tried several evergreen trees without success. It's an economical way to add variety to your collection.
