Another Willow Leaf Ficus Progression

Hey again everyone,

I thought I would share the progression of another Willow Leaf Ficus I have. I've owned this tree since April 27, 2011. Here's the progression.

The tree as first purchased from online:

After a repot into better soil and removal of some roots:

More rootwork, here are the roots before:

And after:

Much better:

I chopped it back a bit:

Then it backbudded and grew like crazy:

So I pruned it and selected future branches:

And here we are as of tonight, with branches wired and tree fed with Miracle-Gro:

Comments always welcome.

Hey, Ryan, that was a mess of roots to prune!

Do you have an update of this tree now? I'd love to see it's progress.

Hey Josh,

It was a ton of roots to remove, but I'm glad this species tolerates that. The tree hasn't really grown much since the last update, but I'm hoping to get it under some T5's sometime this week, after I build a stand for it:

I think it's looking great.
Post some pics of the light set-up/stand, too.

Thanks Josh. I just have a temporary light stand for right now:

But I'll be using this new stand I built here shortly:

Hi Ryan,

I love watching the progression on your Willow Leaf Ficus!!!!

Pretty work...

Question from one Virginian to another.. : )
I have read on another thread about the pros and cons of cut paste. Would you reccomend this or wood glue? What do you use? Where do you purchase your cut paste if you buy the "right stuff" Thank You !!! For all of your help!!! : )

Hi Laura,

Thanks for the compliments. In all honesty I don't use cut paste. I think of the way a tree would grow in nature, and how if a limb were to break off what would happen to the tree? Is there someone there to apply cut paste? Nope. I just let the tree do its own thing and I leave it alone. Seems to not cause any problems. However, if you really want to apply cut paste, the stuff in the link is what I have used before. You can buy it anywhere online.

Here is a link that might be useful: Japanese Cut Paste

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the information on the cut paste. I think i will order some just to have it on hand and then use the other methods that some suggest. I like your idea about leaving them as is, especially if it is a small cut or prune. Thank again.

I will try and make it up to the Mee...Garden Center soon. I will let you know what i find. Probably a road trip up north!!! I worry what will be in the car on the way home though!! : )

Take care,

Keep up the great work!!!

Not a problem, good luck up there. It is well worth the drive and you can easily fill up your car in just one trip.
