pre-bonsai calamondin

Hello,
I have a pre-bonsai calamondin. I have heard some things about citrus trees that they are hard to get branching by wounding. Is that true? I have a non-barked but hardwood, branch that I want some new branches to come off of it. How do I promote that in this specific location? Can I scrape it or make small wounds? How about wounding and then growth hormone to branch?
Cause right now the tree is shooting out new branches on a few random locations but not on the branch I want. The branch I want is exposed so it gets sun.

On another token, if I cut a medium branch off, its hardwood, will new branches grow out of the stub end?
Most non citrus trees this will work on. Just wondering what are the tricks for citrus.

I posted this in the citrus board but did not get a response.

Thanks guys.
-Bill

I'm not sure what you mean by non-barked. Do you mean it hasn't developed very coarse/textured bark yet?

That is correct. The branch is about the thickness of a pencil or slightly bigger and its green with streaks of brown through it. No bark.

Short of grafting, you can't 'order' a tree to grow branches just where you want them. All you can do is cut back the branch and hope it buds at the right place (or close to) - otherwise, bonsai wouldn't be bonsai, but just an exercise in grow-by-numbers! It's seeing what does happen, and what we can do about it that makes it interesting, though if you are really good at grafting, know what you're doing, and it's that important to you to have a branch at just that location, you are free to try it out of course.

When I say I want to specify a location of branchs, Im not being as picky as I sound. I have a 8"-10" branch and want 2-3 branches on it, anywhere, just so you know Im not as picky as I came off.

I thought that maybe I could wound the branch and that would stimulate buds to come out of the wound or use growth hormone. I vaugly remember hearing something about how citrus grows leaves or buds that is different from other trees but I can not remember what it was; if it was harder or eaiser. Ill play around.

Cutting back is what works... though not necessarily below where there's any leaves (only some will bud back below there).

This will work with a citrus too, no tricks with them?

Then this is what I have planed, Im going to layer about 4-5 branches, then when I get them rooted, Im going to cut the branches off. At that point, I should get a bunch of branches where I cut the layer off. Or will a branch stub grow differently?

I sucessfuly layered a branch last year with no problems, no rooting hormone, and little effort so I know that works well with this type of tree. This time Im going to use dip n grow rooting hormone. The layer from last year is a tree larger than the parrent!
When I layered off this branch, I cut the stub off and put putty over the wound, I never had branches grow from around that spot. Im guessing if I left the stub, I would have had a few branchs come off of it. Is this true?

Check out my horiable drawing of my plan in the link below. That might clairify my plan and what I would expect.

Thanks for your help.
