Hans-Werner - could it be "Aphrodite"? I recently bought Starr Ockenga's book on Amaryllis which has a glossary at the back which includes a photo of Aphrodite - could be....

Thanks everyone - especially Hans-Werner - how I envy all your knowledge. I fear I will have more and more amaryllis every year - I have a very small house - but a huge obsession/desire for these gorgeous blooms, and the way they grow. In a way, with drifts and drifts of snow as a backdrop, the flowers become almost magical.
