Planning for 2015/anything new to you, or unusual?

The plant and seeds catalogs are arriving, full of temptations. What new items do you have your eye on, or what new plant worked well for you in your garden last year?

The plants I'm looking at are

1) Gloriosa{{gwi:807}} superba lily, a tropical climbing plant with an amazing floral display in late summer. Gotta try it!
2) Begonia{{gwi:807}} grandis, a hardy, low growing perennial that winters over up zone 5.
3) impatiens{{gwi:807}} bicolor, another perennial in colder zones, generously reseeding itself every year. Grows ~6 feet tall.
4) potato onions--an heirloom perennial multiplier onion, produces good sized mild bulbs, plus many seeds.

What are others looking at? What's new in your garden or windowsill?

I didn't know there was an Impatien that would winter over in cold winter areas.

I am trying 'Bowl of Beauty' peony. I have seen one in town that blooms every year. Giving up on 'Festiva Maxima' - foliage only for 15 years!

Iris--there is at least 1 indigenous impatiens called 'jewel weed'. Orange flowers, seed pods that burst when touched. Incidentally, the juice is supposed to cure poison ivy if spread liberally on affected areas.
Bragu--I tried starting Jacks before with no luck. Let us know how you do with these.

Here's another I'm going to try: snake gourds. My friend grew these up a tall trellis (pictured), and the 4 foot zucchinis are still tasty even at that size. I have seeds if anyone would like some, jlmk.

I just ordered seeds for Dahlia imperialis (tree dahlia). I had one years ago but it wasn't in a good spot - it dropped petals all over the lawn.

bragu - How did you start Jack in the P seeds?
I left two ripe stalks of JP seed pods on the ground around the mother plant half hoping that they would germinate.

Rick in CT, I would love seeds of the 4 ft. zuchini and snake gourd. They look so cool. I am retiring in April. I will have more time in the garden. Where shall I send postage or SASE? I ordered a few different cucumber from Johnny's Selected seeds. Would you like some?

I'm thinking about yellow Narcissus outdoors. Starting them soon but then keeping them going 'till spring and planting them in the garden. Never tried it but I want to see what will happen. Maybe some white ones too.
