My Freesias stay in the ground all year, unless I'm having a renewal session.

Which means they get whatever rain and drought come to them over the summer. They will probably start thinking about coming up in March- April.

If they're in company with annuals or succulents that don't get watered deeply and daily they should be fine.

I don't think I'd use peat, though. Gritty soil would definitely be better. Excellent drainage and good sun-hours essential. And frost protection - otherwise the leaves go mushy just when they're needed.
