Hyacinth help!

Last week, my boss gave me a hyacinth that is planted in a plastic container and set into a clay pot. This week, the beauty and fragrance are GONE! The blooms are turning brown and curling up, but the leaves are green and vibrant. What do I do with it now?

I would eventually like to plant it in a flower bed but I don't have one started yet. How do I keep it alive till I can plant it in the spring? Should it even be planted it in the spring? Should I water it? Should I keep it in the dark or in the light? Cold environment or warm?

Can you tell I am hyacinth-challenged? :-) Thanks for your help.
