Most likely squirrels will leave them alone. Now that the tulips are actively growing they arent seen in the same light to the critters as the tasty dried dormant morsels in the fall. The true reason chicken wire is suggested in the fall is because the soil has recently been turned which causes animals to instincively flock to the area, birds for worms, squirrels for the lost nut they obviously left there.

Take it up now, I'd say.

I agree with tuliper. Squirrels will no longer go after your bulbs. They will however chomp off the flower stalk just when it's about to bloom. I hate those little buggers. Wouldn't mind if they were hungry and actually ate the flower. They just do it to annoy me. LOL. I've had some success by spraying with animal repellant.
ps - they don't seem to bother with crocus or daffys.

tulips are always a bit at risk of being eaten but narcissi are generally unpleasant, even poisonous and can be left to their own devices from one year to the next. Deep planting is best (and also gives the bulbs a chance to naturalise).

I take the mesh off as soon as I can in spring. April for me. I have never had them dig then. It's more when they see me planting. The mesh is great! I now can grow crocus, which is favorite squirrel candy.
