I just moved to Houma Louisiana and I saw tulip bulbs on sale in Big Lots last week. I thought they needed cold. When can these be planted here??????

RE: Tulips in Louisiana?????

Yup, tulips can be grown in hot climates as annuals, once they bloom they are gone forever because they wont survive BUT YOU HAVE TO CHILL them for 8-12 weeks prior to planting. Good reliable bulb sources like John Scheepers ship you your bulbs prechilled and ready to plant immediately, you place your order and they ship you when the bulbs have gone through the chilling process, but bulbs you find in places like Home Depot or sources like that are not prechilled, no wonder why they go on sale during these months of the year. Purchasing bulbs off season, specially tulips is not such a good idea, many of them mold up and die during the chill, or by the time you plant them its too warm for them. When I plant tulips I purchase them in October chill for 8-10 weeks and plant them in December/January so by March they have already blooomed.
