Caladiums: start early before vacation, or wait and plant direct?

I just bought my caladiums a few days ago. I was about to start them indoors on heat mats, which is what I have done the last 2 years. Even though I used the heat mats, it seems to take forever to get them started: maybe they just wait until it gets good and hot outside anyway.

But then I realized...I might take a trip for a week or 10 days in May. I do not think I can ask anyone to baby sit my caladiums: it will be enough if they watch my garden for me.

Am I better off just waiting til early June, then planting them directly in the pots? I use these in pots of mixed annuals. If I wait, should I keep the bulbs in a cool or a warmer place?
