They are most certainly better off in the soil than not.

I hope most will survive and come up next spring.
So long as they weren't totally dried out, they should survive.

hmmm...Some may even come up this year. If they do, you will need to not mow the foliage off until it has yellowed a good bit. Planting daffodil bulbs in a yard, that get's mowed once the grass starts getting tall, is not a good place to plant them. Some spring blooming bulbs do fine in a yard/lawn that gets mowed, but daffodils don't.

Maybe your conditions are different, Sue, but daffodils are very frequently grown in grass here and thrive. You just have to leave the grass long while they die down.
