The spent flower should be removed as soon as possible after bloom is over..... You don't want the plant to waste all the energy into making seeds. I just snap off part of the stem under the spent flower. You can remove the flower stem as far down as you'd like until you start hitting leaves.
The leaves should remain on, until they have browned.... So the plant can get and store energy to bloom again next year.
