gladiolus disease? pest? what?

I'm at a loss here, love glads but have had this problem with them for a few years. Can anyone tell me if this is a rust, water problem, c/b thrip but never see any on them. I live in calofornia and leave the corms in the ground year round. Thanx!

Tried to upload another picture that shows the buds streaked and deformed as well, perhaps I can do this in another post if needed, I guess only one pic at a time?

I don't know what's wrong with your bulbs, sorry, but yes, you can add one pic per post.

That is thrip damage. The insects themselves are tiny (< 1/16th inch) so no surprise they are not readly visible. In very mild climates like yours, thrips will overwinter easily so treatment is necessary.
