Hi - Do I need to do anything to help this Gladiolus?

I'm new to gardening and I'm not sure what to do.

They look planted kind of shallow. How deep did you plant them? I apparantly have the same problem, because mine are full size and blooming and tipping over everywhere. :p
This winter I'm going to re-dig them deeper. Someone said 6 inches isn't too deep.

Thanks Tweedbunny I planted them about 3" down.
I have some more I can try planting deeper and see what happens.
It seems to be a good spot for them.

I plant my glads 6 inches deep.....and I put stakes in the ground at the same time I plant. I don't worry about the leaves tipping or bending over.....but the flower stems, can take a nose dive into the dirt because they are so heavey. Once the flower stems start to flower, I tie them to the stakes.

If the glads bend and break, where do you cut them back?

I planted mine by directions which was 3 1/2 inches. I even staked them.

We have had unusually high wind and record rain.

To heck with the directions--put them 6" down at least. The soil will be a bit cooler down there on hottest days. You'll need stakes, too, no matter what. For the flower stalks if not the leaves too. Glads are really heavy. I got the green painted heavy wire ones at Lowe's, cost 79 cents to a dolllar each. They have bent circle tops so you slip the stalk in the circle.

If you have a bed of glads a grid of garden twine and 4 stakes at each corner of the bed makes a nice support for the leaves and the stems. And when they are fully up you can't see the twine.

Home Depot sells cheap bamboo stakes. I got a 10 pack of 60" stakes for $2. I break them if I don't need 5' and they work great for keeping the Glads from tumbling over.
