I am puzzled as to when it is safe to cut back foliage on my daffodills.
I believe that 6 weeks is the normal suggested amount of time so it should be fine to cut it off now even though it is still quite green.

I tend to assume that the plant knows what it's doing, so I leave the leaves until it decides it's done with them.

As long as the foliage is green the bulbs still get some energy from it and will store some stuff when the leaves wilt and turn yellow. Cutting off green foliage does weaken next year`s flowers. I once watched a planting tended by municipal gardeners. They were over-tidy, always cut the daffs off when still green and after 3 years there were zero flowers.
The daffs will appreciate your patience, you could snap off emerging seed heads though.

It makes sense that for as long as the foliage reamains green the plants are still storing food and growing -but- from what I've heard (from gardeners far more knowledgable than myself)studies show 6 weeks to be a fairly consistent date as to when foliage can be cut back safely without damaging next years bloom.

I don't know what the daffs are doing when they hang around late, but apparently it's got little to do with next year's flowers.

BUT the studies also showed that cutting leaves prior to 6 weeks had an absolute damaging effect on re-bloom.... so you must give them at least that long.

also... this year my tulips already died back while the daffs that bloomed at the same time are still green and fresh looking.

I had some daffodils that I waited till end of July last year to cut back and they didn't bloom at all this year! And that was past the 6 week rule. Apparently, they were STILL not done storing their energy. What a shame!

Kent, I would think that something else was maybe going on with those daffs. Did you wait until the end of July to cut back all of your different daffs, or did some die back earlier than that?

I'm suspecting the ones that did not bloom might be in a bed that is getting watered regularly, that 'might' have caused problems...See #5 and 6 at the link below. I never water them after they bloom here...They only get whatever Mother Nature supplies.
