How much room do bulbs need to grow?

I was wondering how much room do tulips and narcissus and other type bulbs need to grow both depth-wise and on its sides? I have an area next to my house I want to fill but while digging after about 6-8" I hit concrete. Can bulb roots grow in this area? Thanks in advance to those who reply

Do you mean solid concrete or some kind of concrete rubble? Solid concrete will be a drainage and root growth problem. You could plant the bulbs shallow and they might do well with maybe three inches of soil under them, but it doesn't sound like a long term successful planting spot.
