Has anyone successfully overwintered elephant ears in NW Pa?

Last fall I bought 2 elephant ears and 6 cannas at clearance prices. I put them in the basement, and brought them up this spring, divided the cannas and potted them all. I got 28 cannas out of 6 pots. At the end of May, I put them all in the ground. I know of a couple of people that leave their cannas in the ground in my zone, but am not sure about the elephant ears. Has anyone been successful with leaving them in the ground in NW Pa?

I had one in NE Oklahoma (7A), and my experience was that over 4-5 years, it was hardy...BUT...the ground didn't get warm enough to start it into growth till June or even July. Admittedly, how deep I had it planted may have affected that. But consequently, it didn't make much growth/impact. It needed to start growth much earlier....to make good leaves and enlarge, I'm sure mine shrunk.
Incidentally, yes, I never lifted cannas..and they got to be a nuisance invading the yard several times, when I'd either dig them up and give away or mow them.
